At the end of June, in the Philippines took place the 10th edition of ToyCon (Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention), a yearly event that attracts toy, comic, manga, anime, movie, game and pop culture ethusiasts all over the country. Hosted within Megatrade Halls 1-2-3, a name whose resonance seemed to anticipate a great event, the convention also had some very important cosplay highlights.
For this year they had a lot of things lined up, and apart from the usual exhibits and huge amounts of toys and merchandise, a competition to determine who would get the honor to represent the Philippines to the Asia Cosplay Meet was held. And, perhaps to further underline the importance of cosplay in this country, ToyCon was the stage for the live filming of Cosplay Nation, “a film about identity and about long-standing class and cultural differences”, produced by Yian Studios, Beijing and internationally distributed by the China Film Group Corp; the movie features Linda Le, Cheng Yi and Alodia Gosiengfiao.
Our friend Z3ll also attended the event. In his words, “Toycon usually attracts collectors and anyone interested to get good finds, but this year there were certainly a lot more cosplayers present. There was a wider variety in terms of cosplay, lots more game, comic and movie characters not only from Asian intellectual property rights, but also from the West, and even from those that are proudly Filipino”.
