Cosplayer: Callesto3

// November 25, 2011

We are delighted to present one of Cosplay Gen’s newest friends, Callesto, a talented cosplayer from New York, USA, who has already gathered over seven years in this hobby. She also contributed to Cosplay Gen #04, with an Ichihara Yuuko (xXx HoLic) wig-styling tutorial, available in the latest issue of the magazine.

Not only a cosplayer, but also a photographer, Callesto began sewing around 2004, when she was inspired mostly by Arwen’s costumes in the Lord of the Rings movies, but also by Guinevere’s green dress in the movie King Arthur, an outfit that she considers her “dream costume”. Those two were the costumes that got her interested in learning how to sew, in order to make her own copy of her favorite designs. Later on, she started to watch anime, and thus she was attracted into the world of cosplay and conventions.

Her favorite costume up till now is Rapunzel from Tangled!, whose characters and story she absolutely adores. She confessed she has a lot of fun wearing it and interacting with kids who also love the story. Another fact that made her choose that costume is that she has a choice of wigs when she wears it. Besides that, it is her new favorite costume because of all the custom work and time she put into it. The pattern for the bodice was hand drafted to match the seams in the movie; it is made with an inner layer of coutil, and has steel bones. She hand dyed the corset fabric, and then screen printed it with Rapunzel’s flowery print that she hand drew out for her screen. The skirt is also hand dyed and screen printed with hand painting in the middle panel, to give it a metallic sheen. She is currently working on hand embroidering the designs around the bottom of the skirt, a long process that she hopes to finish until January, when she plans wearing it at a convention.

For Callesto, cosplay is an amazing hobby that gives her the chance to make the amazing costumes that catch her eye in films and anime. At the same time, she gets to play with wigs and makeup that, other than for Halloween, she wouldn’t get the chance to create or work with. In the future she hopes she will still be able to take the time out to make costumes and hang out at conventions with her friends, as she doesn’t really see herself parting with the hobby anytime soon!
